Visa rules depend on the passport you travel on, your route and how long you stay. Check the rules for every country you enter or transit, and check again shortly before you leave.

For Australian passport holders (at October 2026)

Country Visa Notes
Botswana Not needed for tourism Up to 90 days
Zimbabwe Needed On arrival or as an eVisa before you go
Zambia Not needed for tourism Up to 90 days
South Africa Check before travel Including transit through Johannesburg

The KAZA UniVisa (about USD 50) covers Zimbabwe and Zambia, plus day trips into Botswana through Kazungula. It's only worth it if you'll cross between Zimbabwe and Zambia, for example a day in Livingstone. Check the official conditions first.

Passports need at least six months' validity and two blank pages. Always confirm on Smartraveller before booking.

What to check for a multi-country trip

  • Passport validity, blank pages and entry rules for each country on the route.
  • Single or multiple entry: leaving Zimbabwe for a Botswana day trip and coming back can matter.
  • Transit rules for Johannesburg or other connections.
  • Documents for children, such as birth certificates and consent letters where required.

Write down every entry and exit in order, including day trips, before choosing a visa. A visa for one country doesn't automatically cover its neighbours.

Crossing by road in a rental vehicle

Ask your rental company for written permission to cross every border on your route, and a full list of the paperwork for each country. An ordinary rental contract doesn't usually allow it.

  • Vehicle registration (or certified copy), rental agreement and cross-border letter.
  • Country-specific third-party insurance, road taxes and border fees.
  • An international driving permit if required, plus your home licence.
  • Border post opening hours, and time for queues. Plan to arrive in daylight.
