Adventure needs preparation
Wildlife encounters, remote locations, road travel, boating, walking and other outdoor activities carry risks, including serious injury or illness. Conditions and emergency help differ between destinations. Good planning helps you understand and manage risk; it doesn't make travel risk-free.
This is general information, not a liability waiver or a personal risk assessment, and it doesn't remove our obligations or your rights under the law.
Wildlife and activities
Follow park rules and your local guide's instructions. Keep your distance, stay in designated areas and never feed or approach wildlife. Activities can change or be cancelled because of weather, animal behaviour, water levels or safety. Check the operator, guide qualifications, age limits and equipment for each activity.
Our own travel, environmental and military backgrounds shape our advice. They don't replace the professional qualifications, licences or permits needed to run an activity in each country.
Self-drive and remote travel
Check road conditions, daylight driving times, vehicle suitability, border permission, insurance exclusions and breakdown support. Know how you'd communicate without phone signal and how an evacuation would work. A suggested route or drive time isn't confirmation that a road will be open or suitable on your dates.
Health
See a travel-health professional about your route, vaccinations, malaria prevention and personal circumstances, including pregnancy, young children, medications and health conditions. Read our malaria and safari health guide. In an emergency, contact local emergency services and your insurer. This website isn't an emergency service.
Passports and borders
Check entry, transit, visa and re-entry rules for every traveller. See our visa guide and current Smartraveller advice.
Travel insurance
Take out suitable insurance before you commit. Ask about the countries and activities you're planning, medical evacuation, cancellation, pre-existing conditions, self-drive and exclusions linked to government travel advice. Your travel insurance is separate from any business's liability cover.
Children and accessibility
Check age limits, supervision, room arrangements, mobility access and activity suitability with each provider, and let us know any practical needs when we plan.
