Lake Kariba by houseboat

Shared meals, open water and a slower rhythm: what to check before you book a houseboat.

A houseboat changes the rhythm of a trip. Instead of packing up each morning, your accommodation becomes part of the journey. Lake Kariba's wide water and changing shoreline, with Matusadona National Park to the south, make a lovely contrast to days of game drives and road transfers.

Choose the boat around the people

Start with the layout, not the headline guest number. How many cabins and bathrooms are there, which rooms have air-conditioning, and where can people find shade or quiet? For a mixed group, separate sleeping space matters more than squeezing in another berth.

Know what the quote includes

Ask for a written breakdown: crew, meals, drinks, fuel, tender boats, activities and fees. Is it catered, or do you bring groceries? If there's a chef, agree menus and dietary needs before you go.

Think practically about children

Look at the railings, stairs and deck access, and confirm child-sized life jackets. Plan close supervision around the water. An onboard pool or enclosed cabin doesn't make the whole boat childproof.

Keep the schedule light

Choose a few priorities, perhaps time on the water, photography or fishing, and leave the rest flexible with the skipper. The point is to enjoy being there.
