Weather, river levels, where the animals are and which camps are open all change through the year. These are broad patterns across Zimbabwe, Botswana and Zambia, not guarantees for every reserve.

Our starting point for a first safari
If comfort matters most, the cooler dry season from June to August. If you'd trade hot afternoons for the best sightings, September and October. Our Hosted Safari 2027 runs in July, in the dry season, for exactly this reason.
June to August: cool days, cold mornings
Mornings in an open vehicle are colder than people expect. Bring layers, a windproof jacket, a beanie and gloves. Popular camps and school-holiday dates book out early.
September: dry and warming
Vegetation is thin and water is scarce, so animals gather at rivers and waterholes. Expect dust rather than green grass, and warmer afternoons as the month goes on. We build in a relaxed middle of the day.
October: rewarding, and seriously hot
The late dry season can be spectacular, but don't choose October on sightings alone. In hot valleys, shade, airflow, drinking water and rest matter. Ask what cooling a camp has overnight.
November to March: a different safari
The rains turn the bush green and bring in migrant birds. Thicker vegetation and more water spread the animals out, so they can be harder to find. Some camps and roads close, so a green-season trip has to be built around places that are open and reachable.
By destination
- Hwange (Zimbabwe): known for wildlife gathering at waterholes in the late dry season.
- Mana Pools (Zimbabwe): check access and camp opening dates around the rains. ZimParks · Read our Mana Pools story
- Lower Zambezi (Zambia): July to October is strongest for wildlife; many camps run roughly April to November. Zambia Tourism
- Chobe and the Okavango (Botswana): May to October for dry-season viewing. The Okavango floods arrive during Botswana's dry months, so water activities depend on the camp. Botswana Tourism
- South Africa: Kruger has summer rain; Cape Town has warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters. SANParks · Cape Town Tourism
Victoria Falls: more water isn't always a better view
March and April are usually peak flood. The power is incredible, but the spray can hide whole sections of the Falls and you will get wet. As the water drops later in the year, more of the gorge is visible, and by November and December parts can be dry. The view differs between the Zimbabwe and Zambia sides. Five questions before you pick dates
- What would make the trip for you: wildlife, the Falls, photography, the river, or a city stop too?
- How do you handle heat and cold, including 6am drives and warm nights?
- How are you travelling: self-drive needs current road advice, remote camps need confirmed transfers.
- How flexible are your dates? Compare total cost, including flights.
- Who's coming? Match the pace to the group, and check age rules for children.
