Chobe: the river of giants

Why time on the water and time on land together make a Chobe stay so special.

Updated October 2026 · Wild & Wonder Safaris

An elephant herd crossing a river in a line

Chobe is one of Botswana's best-known wildlife areas, with Kasane as the gateway to the riverfront. It's home to one of the largest elephant populations on Earth, and the river is the heart of the experience.

Mix water and land

A boat at water level changes everything: herds swimming across, hippos grunting, crocodiles on the banks, and the sun dropping over Namibia on the far shore. A game drive takes you along the riverfront and into the bush. When comparing options, ask about group size, how long each outing runs, the guiding and collection times. A few well-chosen outings beat a crowded schedule.

Look beyond the name

Chobe National Park covers very different areas. A riverfront stay near Kasane is not the same as travelling deep into the park. Match the location to your time and travel style before you compare room photos and prices.

Make the connections realistic

Kasane is an easy start or finish for trips that include Victoria Falls, Livingstone or Hwange. Allow time for transfers and border formalities, and ask exactly what's included, rather than assuming a short distance on the map means an easy crossing.

For families, check the ages accepted on each activity and whether private boats are available. For photographers, talk to your guide about your priorities, and stay flexible. The best moment is often one you never thought to wish for.

Chobe is the first stop on our 2027 hosted safari. Or we can build it into a private trip.
